What does the first consultation look like with a homeopath?

Classical homeopaths may differ in some areas, and there are some things which will be unique within their practice, but classical homeopaths have more in common than not.

For instance, the first appointment will likely be your longest appointment. This is where I hear about your health history along with current complaints.

In order to understand the pattern of what is happening with you, it is essential for me to gather as much information as possible about your symptoms as they occur within the context of your life, health, and mental and emotional states.

Simply having a “painful headache” is not specific enough for understanding your symptom pattern. It is more helpful to understand where you feel the pain, what the pain feels like, when it happens, how often it happens, the things that make it feel better or worse, and so on. I like to know these things about each of your main complaints because it helps me understand patterns within your symptoms.

Understanding symptom patterns allows me to see which homeopathic remedy will be the best fit in helping your body work through these symptoms to reach a place of improved health and energy. Your symptoms are a guide to understanding where your health has moved off course.

The first consultation lays the foundation for the follow up appointments to come, so I can best assess how you are responding to your homeopathic remedy.  Finding a well-fitting homeopathic remedy is an essential step in the homeopathic healing journey.

I understand that for some of us, the idea of having to explain details about our symptoms can be daunting. It is well worth it, though, in the pursuit of a homeopathic remedy that can help you out of those places where you have been “stuck” in your symptoms.
